How to switch your cat to a water fountain in 7 days

Some cats walk straight up to a new fountain. Others treat it like a stranger for a few days. Both are normal. This is the routine we recommend for the KitbrookPet cordless fountain, and the same idea works for most fountains.
Before you start
- Rinse all the parts before the first use.
- Fill it above the minimum line.
- Pick a quiet spot your pet already likes, away from busy walkways. Next to the food bowl works well.
Days 1–3: side by side
Plug the fountain in and set it to continuous flow, right next to the old water bowl. In continuous mode the lid stays out of the way, so the only new thing is the fountain itself. Let your pet explore it at their own pace. Don’t push them toward it.
Days 4–5: move the bowl
Slide the old bowl a little farther away each day. Many pets start choosing the fountain on their own once it’s the closest water.
Days 6–7: switch to sensor mode
Once your pet drinks from the fountain without hesitating, switch to sensor mode. The lid opens when your pet walks up, and sensor mode uses the least battery. Now you can move it to the room where your pet spends the most time.
If your pet is still unsure
- Go back a step and keep it on continuous flow for a few more days.
- Check the water level. Keeping it above the minimum line avoids pump noise.
- Move it away from busy hallways, where the sensor can also open the lid for people walking by.
- Keep the old bowl available until your pet drinks from the fountain on their own. Your pet should always have water.
Every pet is different. If your pet has a health condition, ask your vet about the right setup for them.
And if your pet still won’t use it, our 30-day pet-approval guarantee covers you: send it back with our prepaid US return label for a full refund of the product price.
